The Sik’lik program is designed to improve language and writing skills, communication and overall self esteem by having students perform original works in front of an audience of their peers.

Forty-eight middle and high school students participated in the Writing and Performance Workshop hosted by national-award winning poet Mike Guinn. Fifteen students then showcased their talents on stage, competing in a two-round poetry slam competition sponsored by the TCU Writing Center and the Fort Worth National Poetry Slam Team.

A pair of Southwest High School (Fort Worth) seniors took home the top two spots, as Tyneisha Williams earned first place and was named the inaugural Sik’lik Champion, followed by runner up Gabrielle Singleton. “We were blown away by talent level of the students who competed in this year’s event,” President Joshua Hernandez said. “It takes a brave person to go on stage and perform, so all of our participants should be very proud of themselves.”

Additional entertainment was provided by TCU graduate and recent American Idol contestant Tim Halperin. Halperin performed several songs from his upcoming debut album “Rise and Fall” and shared additional insight on the writing process with the students in attendance.
